Privacy

PulseGrid Studio has no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, and you never need an account. An account is only for the optional cloud sync, described below.

Who is responsible

PulseGrid Studio is run by Mathias Verdal in Norway, who is responsible for any personal data described on this page. For any question about your data, or to ask for it to be corrected or deleted, email berdalproductions@gmail.com.

The desktop app

Your projects, exports, backups and settings are stored on your own computer: projects in the save folder you choose, settings in your user profile. Nothing about you or your projects is sent anywhere unless you sign in to cloud sync (see below).

Without an account, the app goes online for one thing only: checking for updates. Shortly after it starts, and every few hours while it's open, it downloads a small file from this website that holds the newest version number and the installer's checksum. When there is a newer version, it downloads that installer from GitHub, where PulseGrid's releases are published, and checks it against the checksum. Like any web request, this shows this site and GitHub your IP address; it carries no other information about you, your computer or your projects. The Mac app makes the same check and only tells you when there is a new version. You can turn it off in Settings (F10), and check by hand from Help → Check for updates. Apart from that, the app only opens a web page in your browser if you click a link.

The web studio

The studio runs entirely in your browser. Projects and imported samples are kept in your browser's own storage on your device and are not uploaded unless you sign in to cloud sync (see below). Clearing your browser's site data deletes the local copy, so download a project file for anything you want to keep.

This website

The site sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies. Its fonts and images are served from here. The installers themselves are downloaded from GitHub, which handles those downloads under its own privacy statement. Like any web server, the host may keep standard access logs (such as IP address and time of request) to run and protect the site.

Cloud sync (optional)

Cloud sync lets you work on the same projects on different computers. It is off until you create an account and sign in. Until then the studio never contacts the cloud, and it works exactly the same without it. Even when you are signed in, only the projects you choose go to the cloud. If you do sign in:

  • Your account. Your email address and password are used to sign you in. The password is stored only as a hash, never in readable form. The email address is used for nothing except the confirmation and password-reset messages you ask for. If you choose Continue with Discord instead, Discord asks you to approve the sign-in and tells us your email address and Discord name; we keep only the email address and use it for nothing else. Discord handles that step under its own terms and privacy policy, and we never see your Discord password.
  • Your projects. Each project you choose to keep in the cloud, with everything in it (including imported or recorded audio), is uploaded, compressed, to private storage that only your account can read. Stored alongside it are its name, size, the time of its last change and the kind of device that made it (the Windows or Mac app, or the web studio and which browser). Projects you haven't chosen are never uploaded.
  • Who holds it. This is stored with Supabase (supabase.com), under its own terms and privacy policy. Synced projects are protected by your sign-in and by Supabase's security; they are not end-to-end encrypted and are not shared with anyone.
  • Limits. 250 MB and 100 projects per account, and 50 MB for a single project.

Removing your data. Remove a project from the cloud in the studio and it is deleted from storage; the copies on your computers are kept. To delete your whole account and everything stored with it, email berdalproductions@gmail.com from the address you signed up with. You already have your own copy of your work: every synced project is also an ordinary .pulsegrid file on your computers.

Microphone and MIDI devices

The microphone is only used while you're recording with Record mic, and the recording stays on your device. MIDI keyboards are only read to play and record notes.

Credits

The recorded instruments in the Windows and Mac apps are played from GeneralUser GS by S. Christian Collins, a free SoundFont bank made available for music creation, private or commercial. Its license comes with the app. More of his work is at schristiancollins.com.
